Decoding rights & risks of journalists in the age of shutdowns, surveillance and online gender-based violence.
Overview
Software Freedom Law Center India (SFLC.in), in partnership with Reporters Without Borders (RSF France), commissioned Civic Spectrum to develop a six-part series of explainer videos on press freedom, digital rights and the safety of journalists in India.
The series translated complex legal, technological and social issues into clear, accessible narratives, combining expert insight with the lived experiences of frontline journalists. The films focused on three critical areas: internet shutdowns, surveillance and press freedom, and online gender-based violence against journalists.
Goals
- Make complex issues around press freedom and journalists’ rights accessible to wider audiences
- Help journalists understand the risks they face and the safeguards and legal protections available to them
- Raise awareness of the impact of shutdowns, surveillance and online violence on journalism and journalists
- Explain the intersection of technology, digital rights and law in practical, engaging ways

Approach
We worked with SFLC.in to turn highly technical and sensitive subjects into stories that were clear without being reductive, and practical without becoming instructional manuals.
The six films were organised across three themes:
Internet Shutdowns in India: Two explainers examining how shutdowns affect journalists’ ability to report, communicate, verify information and stay safe in the field.
Press Freedom in the Age of Surveillance: Two explainers exploring surveillance, privacy, source protection, preparedness and safeguards for journalists.
Online Gender-Based Violence: Two explainers examining the disproportionate online abuse faced by women journalists, and how coordinated harassment and digital threats can undermine individual safety and press freedom.
The creative system combined concise scripts, interviews, motion graphics and visual explanations to make complex legal and technological concepts easier to understand, remember and share.
Result
Six films creating an accessible visual resource on the rights, risks and protections shaping journalism in India.
The series gave journalists, media professionals and wider audiences a clearer understanding of the challenges posed by internet restrictions, surveillance and online violence, while demonstrating how visual storytelling can make complex digital-rights issues more accessible.
